A littoral State in the Nigerian context, or globally, must be contiguous or abut the sea. It has direct access to the sea through its own territory. A littoral State is entitled to the attribution of offshore oil well/field within 200 meter water depth Isobaths as that is how its territorial area extends out into the sea. The oil field/well and other mineral resources within this area even within outlying offshore is taken to lie within the State’s maritime territory up to 200 meters Isobaths. A littoral state enjoy the following: a) It is contiguous to the sea and has 200 meter water depth Isobaths within its territory. b) It enjoys maritime territory boundary amicably settled with Akwa Ibom State. c) It had 76 oil wells offshore within its maritime territory. d) It is entitled to the payment of 13% derivation in relation to the sharing of revenue from the Federation account as a littoral State.
